Today the Hawkes Bay is New Zealand's second-largest wine region, leading the country with 70% of Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% of Chardonnay production. It also produces high quality Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and sweet dessert wines, while smaller boutique wineries are constantly experimenting with new varieties.
